Microsoft vs. Google →
According to FT: “Microsoft is offering different terms to different publishers as it seeks to boost Bing by paying some content owners to cut their sites off from Google’s rival search engine, industry executives said on Monday. Many executives and analysts welcomed the idea of large content owners including Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp being paid to “de-index” from Google’s dominant search...

Sea wind turbines ... But how do we get the energy... →
This article examines project ‘Hywind‘— the installation of open sea wind turbines as a means to create ‘green’ energy. Along with the idea of wind turbines over freeways in order to generate wind speed with each passing car, this is a novel approach to mitigating our environmental footprint. But nowhere in the articles does it say how we are supposed to harness...

Well deserved picks, IMO. Fans of the Strokes may also enjoy side projects Albert Hammond, Jr. (his dad was a rocker too) and Little Joy. Adorers of the Libertines will surely be less entertained by Peter Doherty’s new band Babyshambles than by his fascinating police reports filled with multiple-DUIs in one week and feeding his kitties drugs. Maybe you should check out Carl Barat and the...

Don Music “One of Richard Hunt’s most beloved characters was Don Music, a pianist and lyricist who penned such hits as “Mary Had a Bicycle,” “Drive, Drive, Drive Your Car,” and “Can You Tell Me How to Get to Yellowstone Park?” Although his lyrics were so very close to their familiar counterparts, Don demonstrated his artistic frustration by banging his head on the piano, shouting “I’ll...

Double-edged sword
This week, David Brooks dishes out an argument against the modern conveniences of dating. Ezra Klein disagrees. Who do you side with? Brooks: Once upon a time — in what we might think of as the “Happy Days” era — courtship was governed by a set of guardrails. Potential partners generally met within the context of larger social institutions: neighborhoods, schools, workplaces and families. There...

(Lots of) Cash for Clunkers →
Edmunds.com reports that its statistical analysis of the Cash for Clunkers program finds that the program generated only 125,000 extra new vehicle sales, meaning that the cost to the U.S. government was $24,000 for each of those new cars. But then again, taking those ‘ole gas-gurgling cars off the road will result in less emissions down the road. Ah, the Green trade-off…
