    Back to the Dark Ages.

Made it back to the homeland a couple of days ago and already, trouble has reared its ugly head in paradise: an island-wide electrical outage, flash flood warning and high winds have struck the little island of O’ahu. Though the outage was said to last up to 24 hours, my town was lucky enough to be back up and running within 12.

Life without electricity (even for a mere 12 hours) made me draw parallels between contemporary life in darkness and a book-to-movie story called Quest for Fire. Though the film made its debut in 1981, it takes place in pre-human life 80,000 years ago. No dialogue, intense music, sheer violence, all things I’m down with!
Anyway, the film is about a trio of warriors who go on an epic quest to seek fire in nature, since its creation was unknown (no bic’s or zippo’s in those days). Fire brings warmth, food, security and light, which is why it is the cornerstone of any civilization. Tribes protect and sometimes share fire with others and in times of darkness, things are just downright depressing.
Seems as though the same could apply to electricity. No Internet, warm showers, traffic lights, or phone chargers have given rise to a situation of near-chaos. But, such a thing is only temporary and in less than a few hours, the island will likely regain its energy source and be up and running again.
    Bummer.
Oh well, I least I can keep posting.
