The past two weeks.
On the casual walk through the arboretum,
Leaves rattle as the wind runs through them
A white parrot floats past the lush, green landscape
Singing a tune that shakes the silence.
The bugs feast on my flesh while hiking to the falls
The rocky trail is a slippery one.
Wet slippers flip flopping the entire way
Jumping on moss covered rocks just to waste time.
Sitting on the soft white sand on a sunny day
I could hear waves lapping quietly as it hits the shore.
Watching good lookin’ boys toss footballs on the sand
And surfers who catch killer waves and swim back to the deep.
Ships make frequent but brief stops
A portal between the east and west.
The superferry carries a few dozen seasick mucks
Who can’t stomach the rough waves on the north shore.
All in all, this vacation has served me well
A break from the bone-chilling weather
Coffee-driven maddness
And I finally understand the meaning behind “Hawai’i no ka oi”.
For this place is happiness
With the stars up above
The land to my left
And the sea to my right.
Taking part in holiday festivities
With family and old friends
Having no expectations or deadlines
But keeping busy and working like a dog as if I did.
