There’s a solitary man
Who feels deep loneliness
And has lived his whole life that way.
“There are some things I just can’t help doing”,
He mutters to himself softly
While waiting outside the diner.
Coffee mug in one hand,
Cigarette in the other.
He takes a few short drags.
Puff, puff, puff.
There is a loneliness in this world so great,
You can see it in the eyes of the passing crowd
Checking the time with a flick of the wrist
Taking giant steps towards towers of anonymity.
The people in his life
Keep growing without him.
Some more so than others.
And as the man sits still,
The people seem to change even more.
